Fiber Connector Components And Different Fiber Connectors Available Online
Instead of electrical signals fiber cables transmit light pulses. This calls the terminations to be really precise. Except for allowing pins to make metal-to-metal contact, fiber optic cable connectors align microscopic glass fibers precisely to allow for a solid communication system. A fiber connector has 3 major components: Ferrule, connector body and coupling mechanism.
Ferrule - A thin structure, cylindrical in shape that holds the glass fiber. It consists of a hollow center that forms a tight grip on the fiber. Ferrules are made up of ceramic material, metal or high-quality plastic. They are mainly used for single-mode fiber connection.
Connector Body - It consists of a plastic or metal structure to hold the ferrule and to support other members of the fiber cable.
Coupling Mechanism - This is a part of the connector body that holds the connector in place when it gets attached to another device (a switch or NIC).
Let us now look at some of the fiber connectors currently available in the market.
ST - The ST or Straight Tip connector was one of the first connector types that was implemented in fiber optic networking applications. It was originally developed by AT&T. ST connections use a 2.5mm ferrule with a round plastic or metal body.
SC - SC connectors also make use of a 2.5mm ferrule to hold a single fiber. They use a push-on/pull-off mating mechanism which is more convenient to use than the twist-style ST connectors.
MTP - This is a special type of fiber optic cable connector. It is an upgraded iteration of the original MPO (Multi-fiber Push-On) connector designed by NTT. This design was made to basically put an end to several fiber strand. The fact that a large number of fiber strands are available in a small connection, MTP assemblies are used for breakout applications.
LC - A popular Small Form Factor (SFF) connector is the LC type. It uses a retaining tab mechanism, which is similar to a phone connector, and the connector body resembles that of an SC connector. The ferrule of the LC connector is 1.25mm.
You can purchase any of these fiber connectors as per your requirements from a variety of fiber optic cable manufacturers, available via various online stores.
